What is a search engine, and what impact do they have on the internet?
What is a search engine? Well I will almost guarantee you that just came from one. Google, Yahoo, Ask, etc, are the largest and most used engines, they account for over 95% of all searches.
Search engines are used by people who are looking for specific information on the internet. The net is a huge bank of information, and you can find some on every subject that you could possibly think of.
And that is where the engines come in. They were designed to help people locate the information that they are seeking.
The search engines each have their own ways of listing and ranking sights. Websites can either be submitted to the engines or the engines may find them on their own. This happens when a website that is listed in the engines is linked to another site.
Engines use keywords or phrases to connect people with the right sites. When you enter a word or phrase into the engine, you will be provided with many listings of websites that utilize that same phrase.
This has opened up a whole new avenue of internet advertising, one that is more powerful than most others.
When a website owner gets their site ranked highly, it will get pulled up by hundreds or even thousands of people each day. This kind of traffic (the visitors to a website) can be monetized in a number of ways.
The bottom line is that the engines have completely revolutionized the way people use the internet. People can now find the exact websites that they are looking for in a matter of seconds, and internet marketers have a whole new way of making money online.
