I want to share with you 3 critical components of effective search engine web design. If these three things are met, you will have a website that will begin a snowball of traffic that will continue to grow.

Content is the foundation, and without enough content, your site will have very little power at the engines, and it may never get any traffic at all.
Basically, content is what the engines thrive on. They are offering a service to users, that of helping them locate the information that they are seeking. If you do not provide useful, original, interesting content for your visitors, the search engines will simply not send any your way.
And content is also used to sort sites, and the more you have, the more available search terms your site will be listed under, and therefore the more traffic you will receive. Before anything else, make sure you have adequate content, and try to continually add more. It will always be worth the effort.
The next component is the actual layout of your website. Studies show that the optimal layout is three tiers. The first tier is the homepage. From there you will link to your tier twos, the pages directly connected to your homepage. These will be the pages listed on your navigation bar, if you have one.
Then from each tier two, you will want to connect a number of tier threes. These will make up the majority of your content, and each one should be focused on 1-2 low competition keywords.
Lastly, once you have a well build site with a lot of original content, you will want to increase your link popularity. Your link popularity is the amount of other website that have links to your site.
This shows the engines that you are legit, and the more you have, the more priority you will have over other websites. Just like the adding of content, this can be an ongoing process that will always add power and profitability to your website.
