Money Management for Kids
Money management for kids will help them develop proper financial habits at a young age.
We all know that money management is a critical part of achieving lasting financial freedom and creating wealth. But is money management reserved only for adults and people who earn a regular income?
Of course not, and the answer why is pretty simple. Money management is based around habit. Our habitual actions with money are what make up our financial blueprint, and the better our money habits are the more likely we are to achieve financial freedom and start creating real wealth.
Since money management is a habit, would it not make sense for young children to get started in a money management program for kids? Is it too soon to start kids on the path to financial freedom?
It is never too soon to start, and had we all had this type of supportive beginning, we may be in a far different place now. A money management for kids program obviously needs to be quite a bit simpler than an adults plan, but having any plan is a great way to start forming the financially free habits.
In order for kids to practice managing money, they need money to manage. Depending on the age of the child, they may be able to get a part time job. If this isn’t an option, there are plenty of other ways that kids can earn money. Something to keep in mind however is that money earned is more valuable than money given for free. Therefore, to get kids to appreciate money, it is best when they give something in return for the money, like mowing the grass or helping clean the house.
Once kids begin to earn money, it is important that they understand the importance of savings. Saving for children may not be the most exciting thing to do, so you may need to use a little creativity.
A rewards program works very well for children as well as adults. One possibility is to match the amount of money that the kid saves each month. If they managed to save $20, you give them an extra $20 to add to their saving. This can be a great way to get kids in the habit of saving, but you can use any method that you want.
Money management for children is a great idea. Creating money managing habits that are congruent with financial success is a gift that will serve a child throughout their entire life.
