Philanthropy is actually much more prevalent today than it has ever been before. The millionaires and billionaires are giving away money as if it is some kind of competition, and the results have been marvelous. It was not always as popular to give money to charity as it is today. And the amounts given were never even close. Up until 1997, the biggest contribution was from bill Gates and stood at $80 million dollars. Ted Turner brought in to the next level in 97 with a donation of a billion dollars, far exceeding anything that had been given prior. This was still however only the beginning, and the generosity has skyrocketed. The super rich are now offering tens of millions of dollars to charity. Of the highest givers are Warren Buffet and Bill Gates. Between these two, over $70 billion dollars has been given to charity. Warren Buffet has the record for the largest single offering, a huge $31 billion dollars. There are many other billionaires and even millionaires who give away money to others. Of the most generous are George Lucas, Oprah Winfrey, Larry Ellison, Paul Allen, Gordon Moore, and David Geffen. Philanthropy has never seen as much action and generosity as it has in the past ten years, and it is only gaining momentum. The future promises some very large donations and some new records.
