Long Term Career GoalsHaving long term career goals is the starting point of realizing your true potential and adding meaning to everything you do.Goals are terrific. Many people may have short term goals that they use to plan their week or day, but often time these goals are simply to get by, to get through another week. These types of goals have little value because they are not bringing you close to any monumental changes, successes, or achievements. That is where the real value is in having long term career goals. Long term goals, maybe 1, 5, or 10 year goals, give you real direction and purpose. Setting small goals will still be a useful activity, but rather that having goals that keep you stagnant in your present situation they will be small steps toward the accomplishment of your bigger, grander, more meaningful goals. So how can you set long term goals? Well look into your future, what do you want to see? What kind of work would you like to be doing? What income level would you ultimately like to enjoy? Do you want to eventually work for yourself? Engage in mountain top thinking. Visualize your ideal life 5 or 10 years from now, what does it look like? In this way you can look past the day to day triviality and decide the direction that you want your life to go. And be sure to think big. There are no limits on what we can accomplish expect for those that we impose upon ourselves. Think big, decide exactly where you want to end up, and write out a goal statement describing your goals as clearly as possible. Also, try and write it in the present tense, as if it has already happened. Then once you know the end that you are wanting to reach, you can use your short term goals, daily weekly, and monthly, to bring you step by step to the realization of the ultimate goal that you are striving for. When you know where you want to go, you have a great shot at reaching the desired destination. The only people who end up going nowhere are the ones who never set long term goals for themselves.
