Jay Gould
Jay Gould is the 12th richest person in the history of the United States. Known as the robber baron, he dominated his industries to amass a grand fortune of $58.2 Billion dollars.
Gould made a ton of money in the stock market, but not by traditional methods. He lived in the 18th century, a time when the stock market was not regulated very much at all.
He was a bright man and knew the way the markets worked. Because they were so unregulated, he was able to manipulate certain stocks. His manipulations created vast profits, yet the same practices today would land him in prison very quickly.
While he invested heavily in the stock market, that was not his only source of wealth. He also invested a good deal of money in the railroad industry at a time when it was making those involved exceptionally rich.
He is known for having a major impact on the development of the unites states. His investments were used to develop a much more connected nation. The money that Gould invested spurred great growth in the railways and communication systems and brought them both to the national level.
