Homes of the rich famous. Take a peek inside the lives of the super rich
So just how opulent are the homes of the rich and famous? Over the past decade the number and size of mansions being built has skyrocketed.
In 1995 there were only 6,000 homes built in the united states that were larger than 5,000 square feet. Ten years later in 2005, the number of home built larger than 5,000 sq ft jumped up 500% to over 30,000.
And while 5,000 square feet was considered large a few years back, the new standard in upscale places like Greenwich, Conn., Palm Beach, Fla., and Atherton, Calif., the new standard is more than 10,000 square feet.
Yet, the super rich like to take things to the next level. Some billionaires like Ira Rennert are building houses that surpass the 60,000 sq ft mark. Steve Cohen has a 30,00 square foot home that includes an indoor basketball court, a full size ice rink with zamboni, and a full size swimming pool that is enclosed in a glass atrium.
In 2007 there were 3 vacation homes for sell that surpassed the $100 million mark. Donald Trump has been trying to sell one in Palm Beach for $125 Million, and Prince Bandar has put his Aspen home, a 95 acre ranch with a 56,000 sq ft mansion, for $135 Million.
When billionaires and big-time spenders compete, there is no telling how magnificent and opulent their homes can be. And ot seems as though more and more people are reaching high levels of wealth, and so the competition continues.
