College Student Money Management
College student money management tips
College is a wonderful time. You get to plan and build for your future, as well as enjoy a great social life before having to enter the real world.
As great as college is, it is expensive. And I’m not just talking about tuition and books. Many times college is the first time when a young person starts to support themselves, at least partially.
Because of this many students are often finding themselves tight for cash. They may have enough to cover all the necessities, but they do not seem to have much left over for the fun stuff.
Having been a student for a long time (probably longer than necessary) I have learned some great college student money management tips.
The key is cutting back on expenses and all the necessities, therefore having money to use for enjoyment and fun. Cutting back expenses is not hard as long as you know where some money can easily be saved.
First, never buy books new unless there is no way to get a used copy. Being a procrastinator myself, I always wait till the last minute to get my books. Because of this all the used books are gone and I am forced to buy new. I could have saved thousands over the course of my college experience had I gotten books at the first chance.
You can also save money by eating a few more meals at home or at the dorms. Eating out all the time can be expensive, even if it is only McDonalds. $6 meals 3 times a day adds up pretty fast. Hit the store and load up on some quick and easy meals. This is a good way to ensure you have money to take out that good looking classmate of yours.
If you drive a lot, you should do a little investigating to find out where the cheapest gas in town is located. The difference can be as much as 10 cents per gallon or more, and once again, something small really ads up over time. Also be sure that your tires are properly inflated. Having tires that are low on air really sucks up a lot more gas.
And if you ever have the chance to carpool to class or work or anywhere else you drive, take advantage of it. Or heck, you can always get a mo-ped that gets 100 miles per gallon, that should save some cash.
College student money management can make sure that you are not wasting money on where it can be saved and used for the more enjoyable parts of college. And if you get into the habit of budgeting your money and cutting back on expenses, the habit will last a lifetime. Good money habits can ensure that you are never at risk of going broke.
