New website owners are often left to their own devices after their website is designed. They then wonder why they aren't receiving any traffic. The designer may have created a beautiful site but didn't have the knowledge or the time to provide a marketing strategy. A good web designer will either offer a marketing plan or provide marketing resources.

3 questions to ask your web designer before your site goes live

  • Is my website optimized for the search engines?
  • Has my website been submitted to local and specialized directories?
  • How do I access my website statistics?
Is my website optimized for the search engines?

Search engine optimization refers to search engine friendly web pages. If potential customers can't find your website in the search engines when they enter a keyword or keyword phrase you won't receive many new customers. Create a list of the keywords people would use to find your business online and give them to your web designer. He/she will do keyword research based on your list to discover how many searches those keywords are receiving each month plus find ones you never thought of.

Keywords should be integrated into the design of your website. Places where these should be included are:

  • Meta tags: title, description and keyword meta tags
  • Headings: main title and sub titles using h1, h2, h3 tags
  • Web copy: mentioned several times throughout web page content
  • Navigation: include in text links. Don't use images.
  • Images: image descriptions using the alt tag
  • File names: page names, image names
  • Internal linking: use anchor text (hyperlinked text) to link to other pages within your content
Obtaining lots of high quality links from directories and websites related to your niche is one of the most significant factors affecting search engine rankings. A link building campaign should be started immediately once your website becomes active on the Net. Your web designer can begin the process by submitting your website to local and specialized directories. To find these sites simply type keyword+state or keyword+city in the Google search box. To find specialized directories type keyword+directory into Google.

How can I access my website statistics?

Your statistics display the number of daily, weekly and yearly visitors your website receives. They also show where the traffic is coming from (e.g. which search engines, countries, browsers, etc), and what keywords were used to find your site. This valuable data can be accessed from your web hosting panel or by logging into your Google analytics account (analytics code can be inserted within your web pages). Make sure you ask how to access your website statistics before your website goes live.

Website marketing should be done frequently and consistently if you want to increase web traffic. Develop a marketing strategy that uses a variety of methods. Monitor the effectiveness of these methods over several months by viewing your statistics. This will enable you to monitor the growth of your website traffic.
