Using Your Subconscious Mind Deliberately by Sandy MacGregor Using Your Subconscious Mind Deliberately. I first heard the term "subconscious mind" in 1982. A lot has been written on this subject and many ideas and theories put forward as to what is the subconscious mind and how we can work with it. I have been able to prove to myself the power of the subconscious mind. Having read extensively on this topic, when I teach about the subconscious mind I have chosen to only work with proven, scientifically based theories. What is the importance of the Subconscious Mind? The subconscious mind holds our personality, self image, habits, memory and beliefs. You may wish to alter one of your less desirable habits such as maybe smoking or immediately reacting angrily. Perhaps during an exam you would like to have better memory. Perhaps having a low self esteem may be your issue. For any change you want to make it is vital to change it in the subconscious mind. Have you ever learned say at school how to do this? Were you born with a manual on how to operate your subconscious? Do you know the laws and the language of the subconscious mind? Most people would be certain to answer "No" to these questions. What Is The Subconscious Mind? Everything you need to operate your computer such as a keyboard, screen, disc drive etc., comes with the purchase of a computer. However, when you plug the computer in, it will not work without an "operating system". The operating system is like a basic, predefined set of instructions which coordinates the use of the hardware. After installation of the operating system the computer awakens and can carry out basic jobs like saving data and more critically, it can now accept more refined programming. For example, you will need a word processing program in order to type letters and documents. To start typing a letter you firstly have to ask the operating system to open the appropriate program. You are then presented with a blank page on which you can see the words appearing as you type. You probably don't give any thought to the billions of electronic signals which have been initiated by your operating system and your word processing program to enable you to do your typing. What you are aware of naturally is what you can see on your screen. The mind/body system of the human being operates similarly. Our current awareness is in our conscious mind. It is analogous to a word processor. As we type, we make hundreds of decisions - what to write, whether we have written the letter correctly, how the letter should look, etc. The conscious mind is the decision maker. It requests the subconscious programs to perform certain tasks ("let's go to the shops"), observes what the subconscious programs perform (moving the body to action), and then decides on what else needs to be done. The Subconscious Mind is like the operating system, and contains all our memory, habits and beliefs, personality and self image. It also controls bodily functions. The subconscious mind stores all the information (the coffee is in the cupboard and the milk in the fridge) and the action doer. In addition it also contains programmed instructions as to how many heartbeats to complete, which way the flood will flow, what modifications are needed if the body is walking and also the reaction required for certain situations (our habits). All of this is automatic and does not require conscious thought. The body is like the computer hardware, particularly the screen, set up to respond to the programming. It is the framework within which all this activity takes place. At any given time your body is responding to the programming that is held within the subconscious mind - automatically. The Role Of The Subconscious Mind. Your mind therefore has two components, each with separate functions. It is thought that the subconscious mind is about 88 percent of our mind while the conscious mind is only 12 percent. The subconscious mind is important because it has the ability to record and remember every incident that it experiences. This is called "conditioning". It is an important aspect to how we learn and it allows us to carry out routine tasks without having to think about it. If you experience enthusiasm, happiness or love when meeting a person, this mechanism will record those feelings and associate them with that person. Feelings of frustration and stress are associated in the same way. When you next see that person (or even just think about them) the subconscious mind automatically recalls the previous feelings, and they are re-experienced. This is why thinking of happy memories can make you feel good, and how the mere thought of a person can make you feel angry. This mechanism is a system designed to protect us by emotionally recalling the last experience (in Primary School everyone laughed at me when I drew an elephant). This is in anticipation of a subsequent similar situation (when I had to draw a seal in High School, I immediately felt fear, told myself "I can't draw", and traced the seal instead). However, it is also the reason we can continue to experience a lot of other complex emotional conditions such as depression, fear, anxiety, anger, procrastination, and lingering grief, which can express themselves in other forms such as weight gain, sleeplessness, smoking and general ill health. Recent major scientific discoveries enable us to understand and control this mechanism so we can change these conditions. Your conscious mind can actually program the subconscious mind for new behaviours and habits, in order to react more appropriately to the different situations that we experience. This ability is built into us. Nobody taught us how to walk or how to talk. We were able to achieve these seemingly amazing "self taught" skills at an early age by a process of observation, repetition, imitation and intuition. Sadly it seems that as we age we frequently remain caught in longstanding patterns of behaviour which are no longer useful to us and our ability to self educate seems to disappear. One Mind To Overcome Many Different Challenges. On a day to day basis we face many challenges. There are many situations which are seen as challenges or difficulties such as fear, grief, illness, relationship challenges, worry about change, financial difficulties, career stresses and pressures and many other things. What exactly are problems? Problems are really challenges or opportunities to learn, comprehend and then put something new into practice. It's probably likely that every problem you've had to face in your life has given you not only an important experience but also a new skill to perhaps help you handle future challenges more competently. Problems are usually testing because of the frustration we feel in wanting to solve something that we are not quite sure yet how to achieve. Frequently it is at this point that we become open to discovering a new approach when we may seek help. It often comes down to the common denominator of some change being heralded or demanded. Change itself can be challenging and confronting. Why do we find change difficult? The conscious mind is where the decision to change is made. The subconscious mind (being the depository and task performer) is what must be changed as the very decision itself to change will no doubt cause some clash with your existing beliefs and habits. The 88 percent of your mind that doesn't want to move with the change is the problem as it is only 12 percent of your mind that wants to change. What needs to be changed is the programming in the subconscious mind so that the 88 percent is working with the conscious 12 percent. How can that be done? It can be done using a scientifically proven method to get the conscious mind to influence the subconscious mind in order for them to work together. This involves: * Learning to access the subconscious mind easily and quickly. * Understanding how the mind works with a complete scientific explanation. * Utilising the Laws and the Language of the subconscious mind. * Permanently imprinting goals into the subconscious. * Seeing proof such as biofeedback offered by an electroencephalograph. People resist change as it is hard to do. You can make it easy by deliberately using the subconscious mind. All the best -- Sandy MacGregor.
