The great thing is starting a business on the internet is can be done inexpensively, requiring only the purchase of a domain name and paying for hosting. These two items should cost you less than $20.

Once you're in for the $20 there is work to do. Here is a checklist of what's ahead:

1) Select your niche -- Your niche can cover just about anything you want, whether it's something you have expertise in or not. In affiliate marketing, you can sell products produced by others for commissions without having to buy anything yourself.

2) Start your internet business by researching and selecting keywords and keyphrases which aren't overly competitive but can still drive targeted traffic. This will be one of the main factors in determining the profitability of your internet business.

3) Build your site -- You'll need a website which can be very basic to start. The company that hosts your site should have templates you can use to start.

4) Publish content -- You can publish articles on a number of free article directories to start marketing your website. This is one of the areas where keyword selection will allow people to find your articles and start connecting with your website.

5) Consider an ebook if you have expertise in your niche -- Your ebook, which you can compose and market for nothing, is a great way to establish credibility as well as having an additional product to sell.

6) Continue to create content -- This goes for content on your website as well as articles that you continue to publish. This content should informative and add value for your readers. Focus on publishing high quality, reader oriented content using keywords generated by your research in the natural flow of what you write.

7) Don't forget that you are starting an internet business because you want people to buy from you. While you don't want to be in full time "sales mode", make sure that you make it clear that you have a product to sell.

Getting started is going to be inexpensive but, as you can see, it will take some work. Set your goals, do the work, and you'll be on your way.
