Home Based Internet Businesses - The Three Biggest Business Mum Challenges And How To Overcome Them

If you're a working mum looking to start a home based business you had better prepare for some hard graft, a steep learning curve and lot of fun. A bit like having children really, hard work at times, but very rewarding.

Of all the business mums I talk to there are three things that seem to challenge people the most. As with any obstacles, these can be overcome with a little knowledge, planning and perseverance.

Challenge #1: Time

Being time efficient is something we mums are very good at. Of course, there are always only 24 hours in a day and carving out time to work on your home based internet business can be tricky. If you're serious about building an income generating business though you must make this a priority.

I suggest trying to find 2 hours a day for your home based online business, either by getting up earlier, working later into the evening or giving up some TV or internet surfing time.

Once you've carved out some time to work on your business make the time count by working on important tasks that will bring you closer to your goals. For example, keep a list of tasks that will move you closer to your goals and try to do at least 3 things every day.

With a new home based internet business, your main goals will be to create great content and drive traffic to your site, so your priorities might be writing "pillar" posts and articles, researching keywords, and forum, social media and article marketing.

Make a list of everything you need to do to make your business a success and just keep working through the list.

It may seem daunting at first, but you'll find that 2 hours a day, spent working diligently on your business will reap tremendous results after a few weeks and months.

Challenge #2: Information Overload

Once you enter the online business or internet marketing arena and start researching your niche you'll be hit by the information tsunami. The limitless "free" offers of wondrous products that will make you fortunes in minutes at the click of your mouse usually require an email opt-in to get the information and you'll then be added to mailing lists and receive information (much of it salesy) forever, or until you unsubscribe.

One trick I've learnt (after wasting hours and hours reading rubbish eBooks and trying to digest too much information) is to only focus on one thing at a time. So, for example, if you have a new website up and you are focused on article marketing to build traffic, then only download products relating to article marketing. There will be hundreds, some good, some mediocre, read a couple, take out some ideas you can use, and then implement them consistently for a few weeks before moving on to the next thing.

This takes discipline, but believe me, it's worth it.

Challenge #3: Finding Your Niche

The golden rule here is to find a niche that you love, and that you will enjoy spending time on for the next 2-3 years. Because that's how long it will take to build a profitable, sustainable business generating passive income. If anyone tells you otherwise, or tries to sell you a wonder product, run away as fast as possible. It does happen for a small minority of people, but not for most of us.

Think of the development of your online business as a journey, not an end result, and you'll enjoy it much more (and be more profitable as a result).

Make a list of niches you love, enjoy and are good at, and that you could write, read, talk about, and live and breath for years to come. That's the fun part.

Then do some basic keyword research to ensure you have a hungry market of buyers, not browsers, in your niche. Use the Google keyword tool to find good keywords.

Lastly, check the profitability of your niche by looking at sites such as Amazon, eBay, Dummies and ClickBank to make sure there are people buying products in your niche (as opposed to just looking for information - big difference).

In the online world, competition is good and indicates a hungry market.
